Emma Colley's Random Travels

 Emma Colley's Random Travels

I am sharing some of my random travel photos, this is not only for my followers but more of a reminder for me and my hubby of where we have been and what we have seen over the years. All good memories for us, I hope you enjoy too.

During our recent New York, we stayed in a B&B located in Geneseo and we found some nice restaurants near the Conesus Lake. One morning we took a short walk at a lakeside park.

1. Conesus Lake is considered one of the minor Finger Lakes, it is 8 miles long and 1 mile wide. The lake supplies water to Avon and Geneseo.

2. The Red-breasted Nuthatch was seen in one of the trees on the trail next to the lake.

3. There were groups of Mallard ducks, Common Mergansers and Gulls around the lake.

4.  Views of the trail and Conesus lake, flowers gardens and a fish sculpture with a water feature.

5. Mendon Pond Park, Monroe County NY.

6.  Along the birdsong trail, we saw the cute fairy homes, bird blinds and benches. The birds are used to people feeding them along this trail, the Chickadee and Nuthatches were flying towards us as we walked. One time a chickadee almost landed on my camera.

7. Located at the Mendon Ponds Park is Wild Wings a home for permanently injured birds that are non-releasable.  We saw various species of Owls, like the Barn Owl, Snowy Owls, Long-eared Owls, Screech Owl, Saw-whet Owl, Osprey, various Hawks, Bald Eagles, Turkey Vultures,  Bobcat and they had a very vocal Raven.

8. Help your native raptors.

9. Below are the Barn Owl, Snowy Owl, Long and Short-eared Owls and the Barred Owls.

I am sharing some images from our recent trip to Letchworth State Park, Mt Morris Dam controls the flow of the Genesee River, overlooks the Letchworth Canyon also known as the Grand Canyon of the East.

1. Letchworth State Park qualifies as one of the Audubon's Important Bird Areas. The open water below the dam has been known to attract over 2,000 Canada Geese in the winter. Other birds seen around the dam were the Turkey Vultures.

A view from the Great Bend scenic overlook.

Some scenes from the Letchwork State Park, Inspiration Point, A distant view of the Upper Falls and bridge and views of the canyon walls.

Below are views of the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls.

Birds and critters seen at the park, A Bald Eagle, Canada Geese, Dark-eyed Junco and a Chipmunk.

Finger Lakes, New York

Hubby and I enjoyed a short road trip to the Finger Lakes area of New York. Our first stop was in Montour Falls New York. Montour Falls is 238 miles and close to a 5 hour drive from home.  In Montour Falls we saw 3 named waterfalls just off the road. Seeing a waterfall after a heavy rain is actually the best time. We originally planned this trip back at the beginning of May, but they were having too much rain.

This is the She-Que-Ga Falls, it can be found at the end of Main St in Montour Falls New York. We had perfect weather and skies during our 3 night 4 day trip.

There is a small park area in front of the waterfalls with some benches for enjoying the view.

The She-Que-Ga Falls almost looks like it is going into the back of the town hall in Montour Falls NY. The scene below is used at the beginning of the Hallmark Mystery Movie Series called Aurora Teagarden.

I am not sure the id on this duckling. It was seen alone in the pool of the bottom of the waterfalls.

Aunt Jessica Blantonh's Falls right on Route 14 in Montour Falls.

This is Hector Falls found on Rt 414 not far from Watkins Glen and Seneca Lake.

A view of the sky and Seneca Lake,  Watkins Glen NY. The Finger Lakes area is named for it's series of long thin lakes and lots of vineyards. We visited parks and waterfalls around these lakes, Seneca Lake, Cayuga Lake and Keuka Lake.

We spent 3 nights at a hotel at the top of Keuka Lake. This was the view from our hotel.

Thank you for all your visits and comments.

I am sharing some of my random travel photos, this is not only for my followers but more of a reminder for me and my hubby of where we have been and what we have seen over the years. All good memories for us, I hope you enjoy too.

On May 22nd  we started off the day with a hike at the Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca New York.  It is a Gorge trail with steps along the waterfall and gorge. We completed the loop on the Rim Trail, which was mostly a dirt trail. It was a another beautiful sky and weather day, my luck continues with good weather on our trip.

I was happy to step out of the car and see a few Baltimore Orioles in the trees above my head.  You can see we had a pretty clear blue sky. Also included in the mosaic are a couple of Scarlet Tanager images, we saw and heard him coming down the Rim trail.

The wildflower Trillium were plentiful in the forest next to the Gorge Trail.

This bridge took the trail across to the Rim Trail to finish our hike back to the parking lot.

The Taughannock Falls SP was our third hike on this day and the last waterfall to see. This waterfalls was located in Trumansburg not far from Ithaca New York.

The Taughannock Falls is the tallest free-falling waterfall east of the Mississippi with a drop of 215 feet.  This was an easy flat trail to the bottom of the waterfalls.  We drove to the top to the waterfall overlook. The view of the falls from the overlook is the photo right below.

The stream flows into the Cayuga Lake.

The stream bed is made of limestone.

Tall cliffs were seen along the river up to the waterfall.

I checked the Ebird species listed for this park and there were 3 Swallow species listed, The Bank Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow and the Cliff Swallow.  I am not sure which swallow I have photos of on this post. Could it be any of the swallows I listed above?

Not sure of the swallow species below, which one?  I also had a quick glimpse of a Belted Kingfisher.

On May 22nd, after doing the hike at the Buttermilk Falls State Park we drove to the nearby  Robert H Treman SP to see more waterfalls. We saw the Mill, Enfield Falls and the Lower Falls which was an easy walk.  Then we were off to see the 115 foot Lucifer Falls. The Gorge Trail to Lucifer was closed so we took the Rim trail to the Lucifer Falls overlook

This is the Robert H. Treman Falls, it has a swimming area.

The waterfall below is close to the Mill, I believe the name of this falls is Enfield Falls.

The Mill and adjoining home were originally built in 1839 and restored in the 1920's.

I am guessing this is a Hermit Thrush. Please let me know if I have the wrong id.

Below is a view of the Lucifer Falls, to the right of the falls is the Gorge Trail which was closed the day we were there.  They were having a rescue training practice.  We saw them carrying back a dummy on a stretcher.  These are strenuous hikes, I am thankful for these rescue workers.  The trees were in the way, I could not get a full shot of the Lucifer Falls.

The wildflower Trillium was seen all along the Rim trail.

The Thrush seemed to be more out in the open, I did hear others birds like the Ovenbird, Northern Parula , Wood Thrush and possibly the Scarlet Tanagers.
