Chincoteague Island, Virginia

On Sept 19-21, 2022 hubby and I visited Chincoteague Island, the National Wildlife Refuge and National Seashore in Virginia. I love seeing the wild ponies. It is a great place to see migrating birds, shorebirds and waders, geese and ducks.

Click on photos for larger viewing.

These are images from our first day Sept 19th.

On the top row are the Laughing Gull, Chincoteague wild ponies.Second row: juvenile Little Blue Herons, Snowy Egret with Great Egret, Cattle Egret, adult Little Blue Heron.Bottom row: Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Bald Eagle, sunset and full moon rising.

The Cattle Egret showing it breeding colors on it's crown and back.

The Chincoteague ponies, some egrets were seen on the ground and on the backs of the ponies.

Adult Little Blue Heron with a few first year Little Blue Herons are actually white in color showing a two toned bill.

I am guessing at these 3 birds, 2 were larger in size which I believe are the Greater Yellowlegs and the smaller bird in front is the Lesser Yellowlegs.

The Great Egret is obvious with it's long yellow bill and dark legs and feet.

Snowy Egret with the taller Great Egret.

Ponies, Egrets and on the far right is a Tricolored Heron  flying by.

I hope you enjoyed this post, my photos and our visit to Chincoteague Island NWR.

Chincoteague Island, Virginia

These are some of the pretty scenes from last weekend's visit to Chincoteague and the Assateague Island National Seashore. We only stayed on night and since this was somewhat of a last minute trip, I missed out on our usual Best Western hotel room. I prefer the Best Western it is located right outside the park. This time we chose the Fairfield Inn, a new hotel that opened off the the main street in Chincoteague Island.

Seen in the distance is the Assateague Lighthouse.

The beach at Assateague Island National Seashore.

The boardwalk trail at Tom's Cove.

A beautiful day barely a cloud in the sky.

An early morning misty view of the lighthouse .

I hope you enjoyed my scenic weekend. Have a great day!

Chincoteague ponies

Happy Easter to everyone!

For my Camera Critters
Anyone that has read the book Misty of Chincoteague has fallen in love with these wild ponies. They roam the island and can be seen walking down the roads and on the trails. As a child Marguerite Henry's "Misty of Chincoteague" was one of my favorite books to read. I would bug my Mom and Dad to take me to Chincoteague to see the pony auction they held every July. Now as an adult Chincoteague is still one of my favorite places to visit. I love watching the ponies and seeing all the wildlife that is attracted to Chincoteague Island.

This horse has the number 5 on its side.

I hope you enjoyed my Chincoteague ponies and to see more wonderful
cute critters please visit Misty Dawn's Camera Critters

Thanks to Misty Dawn  for hosting and thanks for stopping by to see my critters.

Chincoteague Island, Virginia

Several times a year my husband and I spend a weekend at  Chincoteague Island, Va. The biggest attraction here is at the Chincoteague National Wildlife refuge. During our May visit this year we passed a couple of the ponies and two foals walking down the road.

The ponies can been seen all around the refuge. I do not know many places where you can sit on a beach in the company of wild ponies. Sometimes we see them walking down the road or off in the fields, they are just so cute. There is a legend that the Chincoteague ponies are descendants from two Arabians that survived a shipwreck and swam ashore back in the 1600's.

Once a year to keep the herd size down , the local volunteer fire dept holds a pony auction. When I was a just a kid my favorite book was Misty of Chincoteague, I think I read it over and over. Besides seeing the horses Chincoteague is one of my favorite places to go birding. One of my photos shows Cattle Egrets sitting on the ponies.

Thanks for the visit, enjoy your day!
